Science is remarkable in that it can specifically identify those genes that carry the code for particular conditions or ailments. If you have ever heard of the science of epi-genetics, it studies effects on how the body’s genes respond to varying stimuli. A cutting edge science popularized by Dr. Bruce Lipton*, this science holds promise for all those that have been under the impression that inherited genes or DNA control the probability of dis-ease or health. While this thinking was once the status quo, science is now showing that even if “it” runs in the family, each individual can have his or her own experience based upon how the genes actually express themselves due to varying environmental factors. There is sound evidence to demonstrate genes are capable of being inhibited or encouraged. Whether its the gene for heart disease, obesity, alcoholism, or something else entirely, there is hope to enjoy a life free of disease. Genes are a small part of the picture not the entire picture; a new portrait of health can emerge at any moment.
It is more accurate to say these conditions are familial or generational. Habits are often passed down through families or even through cultures. For example if the parents eat a certain way, often those eating habits are shared by the family. Likewise, how parents cope with stress often influences how their children will cope with stress and so forth. So if for example, someone carries the gene for heart disease and they consume a diet of rich with deep fried foods, work a high stressed desk job, choose not to exercise and are overweight, one might say it is likely they have a high probability of developing heart disease. If, however the same person that has inherited the same gene for heart disease instead consumes a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, free of all oils and is employed in a low stress active job and maintains an average weight, it’s fair to reason there is a much lower probability this person will manifest heart disease in spite of carrying the gene for it.**
Dr. Colin Campbell, PhD long ago asserted that nutrition actually controls the expression of genes. That’s right, nutrition can literally turn the cancer gene off and on as an example.** Exciting news. It gets even better. New research takes it a step further demonstrating that energy healing techniques such as tapping also control gene expression. In fact, in a recent study conducted by Dawson Church and Garrett Yount*** they demonstrate the genes that control the immune system response are elevated by tapping while the genes that control inflammation are actually inhibited by tapping. Furthermore, science also discovered in 2015 a connection between the brain and the immune system when tiny lymphatic vessels were identified in the brain. This has tremendous implications: when the immune system response is influenced, it actually affects social behavior.**** No wonder why its easy to be friendly when feeling vibrant and healthy and more difficult when feeling miserable and ill. Based upon the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), I specifically use tapping as a validation process that is extremely helpful for moving clients forward from trauma. Tapping provides a simple self help protocol that anyone can do from the comfort of their own home. This latest study demonstrates that tapping reduces stress and enhances the immune response; not only is tapping helpful for emotional challenges but for physical health issues as well.
So while it has long been held that we are definitively shaped by our genetic code or DNA, a new paradigm of medicine is moving away from this out-dated model and demonstrating with epi-genetics, the study of gene expression, that environment influences how genes actually behave. This means we can have the bad genes but don’t necessarily have to suffer the repercussions of their potential. Instead, our reality may be influenced by such factors as nutrition, energy healing, tapping, affirmations, love and likely a number of other factors still to be realized. Science has affirmed we have control over the expression of our genes by the choices we make. While the truth author remains anonymous, this statement may just prove true, “Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”
