Have you ever thought about organic and then after seeing the price tag, thought again? I certainly have. It turns out sometimes it is worth paying the extra money and sometimes it is clearly not.
Did you know there is no regulation on what is put on the packaging in the United States? Packages can advertise all kinds of things – low fat, sugar free, GMO free, vegan, paleo, organic, natural, and more. The only part of the label that is regulated is what is on the actual ingredient list. If the ingredient list doesn’t have the descriptive like raw, organic, cold pressed, etc then it is not, no matter what the packaging says.
Did you know that grass fed beef may contain hormones, steroids and antibiotics? Meat is sold by the pound and the drips (at the ear tag) increase weight by 20%. If it says, “no added hormones or antibiotics”, it is a marketing trick as no hormones or antibiotics are ever added after slaughter. Truly grass fed beef must state, “never fed hormones or antibiotics” on the ingredient label.
Did you know organic labels mean only 50% of the ingredients are required to be organic? Certified organic labels mean that 95% of the ingredients are required to be organic. Certified organic allows for insecticides to be sprayed if the crop is infected with pests and can still be sold as certified organic. Look for Certified QAI. This is the gold standard with much tougher standards than USDA organic. Some countries have no regulations at all and still print organic on the package and the label. Buy local.
Know your brands and better yet, know your farmer.
