Ever since being a child, Easter has been a favorite holiday. Maybe it is the memories of being with family. We would often join up with cousins, at their place or ours or at our grandparent’s home, for an overnight stay. Together, we would engage in the creative process of dying hard boiled eggs on Easter’s eve and wake up to a breakfast of creamed eggs on toast just before hunting for Easter baskets and pretty colored eggs. Not long after, we would find ourselves delving in to a special basket filled to the brim with sweet delights. We would spend the day romping around, playing tag or Marco Polo, swimming and sunbathing or even picking fruit and exploring the garden. The day was always capped off with a grand Easter feast. After dinner, we would often listen while my Grandma played her organ that was endowed with a host of musical instruments; it was more like listening to an orchestra than a solo pianist. For me as a child, Easter was always blessed with love and to this day still holds some of my fondest memories of a childhood gone by.
While siblings and cousins remain, time has witnessed the transition of grandparents and parents alike. Family has spread far and wide with members on the east and west coast with a spattering of extended ohana throughout the islands of Hawaii. As an adult, Easter has a deeper meaning and has come to represent rebirth for me, a day to birth into my life the things, places and people I love. I would often find uncrowded surf breaks or empty streets as many families were enjoying their mornings together whether at home or in church. What a better time than to honor all that is holy in the absence of distraction. My memory bank is full – from surfing at sunrise, diving in the turquoise sea, walking along the cliffs or by the seashore, sinking my feet into the sand, listening to the wind, relaxing under a blossoming jacaranda tree, to enjoying a meal with friends, playing music or games and everything in between.
May this Easter be a time for you to connect to all that is dear and beloved, to honor the gift of life. The wondrous surprises never cease. Evidence of spring, I awoke to this heavenly blossom, the first I have ever seen of its kind.
Love and Hugs, LaRen
