On September 22nd, the sun crossed the Earth’s equator once again. In the northern hemisphere, when the Fall (Autumn) Equinox occurs, it indicates the first day of autumn, north of the equator, and in the southern hemisphere the same day indicates the first day of spring and is called the Spring Equinox. The reverse is also true. The word ‘equinox’ is rooted in Latin and means ‘equal night,’ referring to the 12-hour day and 12-hour night that occurs only on the two equinox days of the year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The equinox is a time to honor the balance and interaction of the light and the dark and is often celebrated on the equinox itself and/or on the days preceding and/or following the equinox.
With the Autumn Equinox having just passed in the northern hemisphere, summer has come to a close. Like the spring, fall is a season of change. The nights grow longer and the days grow shorter. The leaves begin to change color. The air grows cooler. Autumn is a meaningful time of year, to harvest what has been sown in the summer, to plant new seeds for the spring, to contemplate new ideas and create new beginnings, to reflect in silence on the blessings you have reaped. Just as the spring is a good time for cleansing, the fall is an appropriate to clean the house of clutter. The equinox is a great time to restore balance in to your life, to honor the changes that come with the passing of time. One might adopt a daily self care routine in honor of the season of inevitable growth that is part of the natural evolution. Shifting one’s perspective to gratitude brings prosperity during this time of change, taking time to honor the intelligence of nature as her rhythms coexist with your own cycle of personal growth. The Fall Equinox is an excellent time to make space for what is to come in the new year, to allow for the expansion, composting old thoughts, beliefs or ideas to make fertile ground for new creativity and forward progress.
May this autumn welcome you with favor and may you be inspired to implement the changes you know enhance your life. As our world is in the precipice of transformation, each one of us is also transforming. The Autumn Equinox is an integral time to decide how is it that you will participate in the transition of our times. Your thoughts and actions influence the great shift in which we all find ourselves. May you choose those that nourish your soul. In keeping your personal balance, you assist the whole.
