There have been many times I have decided to have a good day or a bad day. Holidays, birthdays, and others. Have you ever decided that no matter what you are going to have a good day or a bad one?
I remember being in San Francisco for a mini-weekend get-a-way and being determined to have a grand time in spite of the pouring down rain, torrential winds, and locking myself out of my friend’s house with my jacket and wallet inside, with a broken umbrella to boot, yet I had a blast. When my friends arrived home and saw my belongings inside, they were panicked I was miserable and that something might be drastically wrong. Nothing could have been further than the truth. I caught a ride to the city and wandered around, listened to music, met people, chatted, sat on green grass and watched the world go by and found my way back home wearing a smile in my heart, albeit I was drenched and cold and found myself joyfully laughing at it all.
On the flip side, I can remember birthdays where I was so determined to have a bad day that no one could turn it around. I shared my birthday with my beloved Grandpa and after he passed, instead of celebrating together, I grieved his death. Thankfully, that all shifted and now birthdays are a time of peaceful appreciation and reflection for all that is worth celebrating, especially the people by whom I have been blessed.
So often our mood is determined by our circumstances. How we react to our circumstances is a decision we can consciously or unconsciously make. Be mindful of what you are choosing.
“We can start our day
with the happiness of a smile
and the aspiration to dedicate
ourselves to the path of love
and understanding.
We are aware that today
is a fresh, new day,
and we have twenty-four
precious hours to live.”
